Elinchrom EL-Skyport triggered by Arduino

After figuring out how the Elinchrom EL-Skyport Transmitter works, I wanted to do a proof of concept implementation with an Arduino. This would allow me verifying my assumptions I made in my previous investigation. The hardware is based on an Arduino Leonardo equipped with a cheap (< 4 USD) nRF24L01+ module. After powering up the Arduino, it sends out a trigger pulse to the EL-Skyport Receiver every 500 ms.

USB FLASH drive repair

During the last years I repaired quite a lot of USB FLASH drives where the owners weren't able to read out the data anymore. Most of them were SanDisk Cruzer types. You can find a lot of complaints about failures online.

All of them had one thing in common: A hardware failure which was easy to repair.

Elinchrom EL-Skyport Transmitter: Protocol and configuration

Following my dissection of the EL-Skyport Transmitter and drawing its schematic, I have further analyzed how this remote flash trigger works. Since a Nordic nRF2402G is used for the transmitter's RF part, the datasheet was a good starting point. The PIC uses a SPI bus to control the RF IC. So I mainly wanted to find out:

Elinchrom EL-Skyport Transmitter: Opening, design, schematics

I got a new light meter (the Sekonic L758DR) which unfortunately can not trigger my Elinchrom studio flashes remotely. Hence I want to built my own trigger module to fit into the L758 RF module slot. In addition I am always curious about the inner guts of my gadgets. Unfortunately the Internet could not help me a lot with information about the Elinchrom Skyport system. So I needed to start my own research. I will post some more information on this system whilst my design work goes on. Today I'm gonna discuss the design of the EL-Skyport transmitter (SPTX-V1.1) as well as some internal key components. This could come in handy in case you have to repair a broken unit, when a switch breaks for e.g.

As you can see, my Skyport Transmitter SPTX has software version V1.1 flashed. Also clearly visible is the FCC ID. This always comes in handy to get first technical documents of electrical devices.

Arduino as a remote shutter release for RICOH cameras

Some time ago I bought a RICOH GR III camera. Since I didn't want to pay the amount for the CA-1 remote, I did a little research how this thing works. Soon I came up with Muttyan's home page. This gives a detailed description of the CA-1's internals and how it works. Good job, there you'll find everything you need!

Basically a button half press, a full press and a release are signaled with three different patterns to the camera via its USB connection. No "real" USB protocol is used, just pulsing the USB +5V supply line. Emulating these pulses is an easy job with an Arduino board, so I did a quick proof of concept.

Canon sRAW in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Als ich das erste mal Bilder in sRAW mit meiner Canon EOS 5D Mark II geschossen habe musste ich anschließend feststellen, dass ich diese nicht mit den Bordmitteln von Mac OS X anschauen konnte. Weder der Finder, noch Vorschau oder Phoenix Slides konnten die Dateien lesen. Kein Wunder, alle greifen ja auch auf die CoreServices von Mac OS X zurück.

Am 9. Februar 2010 hat Apple endlich das RAW-Kompatibilitäts-Update für Digitalkameras 3.0 herausgegeben. Jetzt sollen auch die sRAW-Formate von Canon-Kameras unterstützt werden. Es gibt jedoch einen Haken: Dieses Update unterstützt nur Aperture 3 und iPhoto ’09 und lässt sich daher per Installer nicht installieren wenn beide der oben genannten Softwarepakete auf dem System nicht vorhanden sind.

Es gibt aber doch einen Weg, wie man die Funktionalität in Mac OS X integrieren kann. Der geht so:

Shannons Maschine

Ihr kennt doch sicherlich Shannons Maschine, oder? Falls nicht, könnt ihr einfach hier schauen.

Dass man die Maschine von Shannon auch leicht selbst bauen kann, hat Stephan heute eindrucksvoll bewiesen!
Dazu reichen zwei Schalter, eine 9V-Blockbatterie und ein alter Motor aus einer Auto-Klimaanlage (der, der die Klappen verstellt) völlig aus. Möchte jemand einen Schaltplan?

Okay, hier kommt der Schaltplan:

Das ganze funktioniert folgendermaßen: S1 und S3 ist der zweipolige (Wechsel-) Kippschalter (ON/OFF), den ihr im Video bewundern könnt. S2 ist ein Ausschalter (der Taster rechts im Video). M1 ist ein beliebiger Gleichstrommotor.

Und jetzt geht's auch schon los. Ganz zu Beginn ist der Taster S2 geöffnet. Außerdem dreht der Motor noch nicht. Erst wenn man den Kippschalter von OFF auf ON schaltet. Am Ende seiner Drehbewegung schaltet der Motor den Kippschalter in die andere Position und dreht in die andere Richtung bis er sich selbst mit dem Öffner S2 den Saft abdreht. Gar nicht so schwer oder? Und viel einfacher als die meisten Mikrocontroller-Schaltungen die mal so im Internet findet.

Vor ein paar Wochen hab' ich ein totes Motorola RAZR V3i zur Reparatur bekommen. "Irgendwie nass geworden - doofe Sprudelflasche." Das Ding ließ sich weder aufladen, noch einschalten. Der Bootloader-Modus funktionierte auch nicht mehr. O2 wollte das Gerät leider nicht mehr auf Garantie reparieren. Klassischer Wasserschaden also.

Keine leichte Aufgabe. Aber es gab noch Hoffnung.

Gebrannte Mandeln - Mein Lieblingsrezept

Zum Geburtstag habe ich von Andrea, Birgit und Julia einen Topf bekommen. Aber nicht irgendeinen. Dazu gibt's einen Rühraufsatz mit dem man prima Gebrannte Mandeln machen kann.

Dieser Topf erleichtert das Umrühren enorm. Aber nichtsdestotrotz kann man Gebrannte Mandeln auch in einer "normalen", beschichteten Pfanne machen. Allerdings muss man da schon geduldig im Rühren sein.
